Waldegaard: Age is nothing but a number

Tears of joy epitomised Bjorn Waldegaards unquenched spirit for the Safari. Winning the Kenya Airways Safari Classic Rally with 31-year-old son, Matthias, was an utterly emotional feat at North Coasts Sarova Whitesands, yet the four-time WRC Safari Rally winner wants more of the unforgiving terrain he conquered in his heyday.

Waldegaard won his first Safari Rally in 1977 in Ford Escort. He went on to win in 1984 with Hans Thorzelius in a Toyota Celica TCT, 1986 and in 1990 with Fred Gallagher in a Toyota Celica GT4.

"Its in a Ford that I became famous in the Safari and it was great to win again in a Ford Escort Mark 1," the Historic Motor Sports driver said.

Asked whether hell be back in Kenya to race, the mzee wa kazi of the old Safari quipped: "You know that I am an old man and Safari is a rough endurance race.

Economists say data released Wednesday showing an unexpected fall in construction during the final three months of 2007 puts some downside risk to their forecasts for next week's gross domestic product (GDP) for the December quarter.

Business investment data released Thursday will also show how businesses are handling the RBA's rising interest rate regime and the US economic downturn.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics' December quarter construction work done report shows a seasonally adjusted fall of 1.0 per cent, compared with the previous quarter, to $28,854 billion.

Economists had expected a two per cent increase.

"While there isn't a one-to-one link between work done and components in the national accounts, the soft result points to downside risk to next week's Q4 GDP," Westpac senior economist Matthew Hassan said.

Far North Austin getting more luxury apartments

A Phoenix apartment developer has begun construction on two luxury apartment projects in far North Austin.

Alliance Communities, the Texas division of Alliance Residential Co., is building Broadstone Travesia and Broadstone Grand Avenue, which will bring nearly 700 new apartments to the area.

The 396-unit Broadstone Travesia is going up next to the 216,000-square-foot Travesia Corporate Park on Quick Hill Road across from La Frontera. The 280-unit Grand Avenue project is going up on one mile south of Round Rock on the northeast corner of the intersection of Grand Avenue Parkway and I-35.

"The Austin economy is and will continue to be vibrant, creating strong population growth and employment," says Stephen Sweet, South Texas Division Partner of Alliance Communities.

The perfect Cotswold boltholes

Hello and welcome to my hotel,' says an card left in the room, and at times it feels as if this is all about the owner rather than the guests. Little notes on windowsills repeatedly exhort you to be careful and not to knock over any of the artworks.

The leather-bound welcome book is basically a list of grumpy admonishments - more reminders to be careful, notes about the dress code ('casual elegant') and warnings that 'wind jackets are not permitted', 'children are not permitted in the bar', 'keys should always be handed in to reception', 'TV and lighting remotes must not be removed from the room'. Do they really think people paying £200 a night are going to steal the remotes?

Feeling slightly put out by all this hectoring, we head out for a stroll round Painswick.

Teachers' pay to be pegged closer to performance

Instead, the 29,000 officers in the education service can expect up to a five per cent increment depending on their performance and potential.

Bonuses based on merit will also vary according to whether teachers are graded 'good', 'very good' or 'outstanding'.

'Good' performers will receive a bonus of up to two months' extra pay, while those who are 'very good' will get up to 3.25 months.

'Outstanding' performers can take home up to 4.25 months' more.

Typically, 85 per cent of teachers and school heads can expect to be graded good or very good, while five to 10 per cent will be deemed outstanding.

Everyone, however, will gain from the bigger annual deposits that MOE will put into a gratuity programme for teachers, the Connect Plan.

The ministry deposits a sum every year for each teacher, who can withdraw a part of the money every three to five years.

A Personal Rememberance by John Allen, League Board Member

In 1972, I was halfway home with a flat tire and walked into a bike shop that was just closing. Sheldon stayed late to fix it. That's how I first met him.

There were 46 bicycles in or around his house "with a few shared wheels", by his recent count, mostly in his basement. He didn't buy bicycles off the shelf -- as a challenge to his mechanical ingenuity, and a way to spend less money and spend more time doing what he liked to do, he cobbled up customized bicycles from parts he acquired mostly through special deals, barter or secondhand, to suit himself or someone in his family. He often came up with a something unique, clever and useful. You may read about his bicycles on his Web site. He had an eye for style, but also, one or two rusty clunkers hung out by the back door getting rustier, for the quick ride to the convenience store, and several old hulks of bikes lived under the front porch.

Eons Fitness Survey Shows Boomers Haven't Lost a Step in Their Quest ...

CHARLESTOWN NAVY YARD, BOSTON, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Eons(TM), the media company for lovin' life on the flip side of 50, today announced the results of its inaugural Eons Boomer Fitness Survey of the fitness attitudes and behaviors of the most physically active and healthy generation in history. Baby boomers who fueled the aerobics movement and who crowded running paths across the country are now reaping the dividends of their active lifestyles, with more than half saying they are in excellent or above-average condition, according to the survey.

"Baby boomers are the generation that made Jane Fonda's aerobics videos best-sellers and they took up Jim Fixx's challenge to become a nation of runners," said Jeff Taylor, founder and CEO of Eons. "They have goals they want to accomplish, whether it's travel, building new relationships, or just living the biggest life possible, and boomers know they can only do that if they keep their chassis in great shape."

Scott "Q" Marcus, an Eons fitness advisor whose "Walking the Walk" blog on eons.com inspires readers with practical, powerful and effective fitness and weight-loss advice, said, "The key to fitness is to remember that 'small steps done regularly always generate better results than large steps done intermittently.' In other words, it's better to walk a block - and actually do it - than promise yourself you'll run a mile, but sleep in instead.

Dramatic 'Heavy Hitter' ads now considered OK

Members of a local Boy Scout troop appear in an advertisement for Las Vegas lawyer Glen Lerner that ran during the Super Bowl. The boy on the left portrays a young Lerner, supposedly honing his "Heavy Hitter" skills to defend a boy whose nose was bloodied by a bully.
