State of the Swoosh: Nike forges ahead

Slingshot irons that look pregnant; square drivers rather than pear-shaped ones; and its new all-green IC putter. (The color of the head is designed to blend with putting surfaces and provide a stark contrast to its white alignment aid; Nike Inc.'s staff ophthalmologist, who helped invent Nike's Maxsight distortion-free sports contact lenses, assisted with the putter's design.) Nike doesn't even package golf balls conventionally, preferring to sell dozens in cube-shaped boxes rather than flat, rectangular ones.

Don't expect Wood to apologize. Frankly, he doesn't give a damn.

“The minute we try to appeal to every single person out there or even care what they say, all respect, we're dead," Wood says. “It's not how you can run your business."

Alienating the Establishment isn't a road often traveled by golf entrepreneurs, which underscores again just how different Nike Golf is.

The Trauma Of Disengagement - Divorced Dads, Child Custody in Israel

Jerusalem----August 14...... In the hours to come, thousands of Israelis will be forced to leave their homes in Gaza. Whether you are for or against the Disengagement Plan in Israel - it's going to happen and many tears will be shed. But there is another "disengagement" going on in Israel every day. Not by Zionists being removed from their biblical land, but rather by fathers being torn away from their children.

I was evicted from my home in Israel. I can understand what many will experience in Gaza, in Israel as they are pulled out of their living rooms, bedrooms and playrooms where they spent so much time hearing their children laugh, sing and watching them dance. Fathers are evicted from their homes in Israel every day based on false charges of violence or sexual harassment to their wives.

Israel looks to cut Gaza links

Such an arrangement would in effect end the international sanctions against the Islamic militants.Taher Nunu, a Hamas government spokesman, suggested yesterday that Hamas would seek a future role on the Gaza-Egypt border. "An open border like this has no logic," he said. "We are studying the mechanism of having an official crossing point."However, it's not clear whether Egypt will acquiesce. The Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, has been under intense public pressure at home to alleviate the suffering of Gazans under blockade. However, Egypt would likely be reluctant to have an open border with a territory ruled by Islamic militants.Mr Vilnai's proposal goes against a cardinal principle that has underpinned past Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, namely that the West Bank and Gaza be treated as one territorial unit.

Hit-run cyclist was new to Sydney

THE cyclist killed in yesterday's hit-run crash in Punchbowl has been revealed as an Egyptian national who only arrived in Sydney recently.

Police would not confirm the name but The Daily Telegraph Online understands the rider was Mina Ayad Wahba.

The 30-year-old is understood to be a student.

A group of friends left a bouquet of flowers at the scene this morning to mark his death.

Police have confirmed they are still hunting the driver of a medium to large sized truck believed to have killed the cyclist in a crash on Wattle St at 7.45am yesterday.

Acting Senior Sergeant John Kelly said the injuries were "quite horrific''.

The impact appeared to have been so great that Mr Wahba's helmet was ripped from his head.

Candidates up for south central Mesa challenges

Finter supports building more fire and police stations, but he thinks voters will reject the bond measure in its current form so soon after a proposed primary property tax "went down in flames" in 2006.

Finter believes the proposed capital improvements are too important to risk defeat because of the way they would be funded. He would prefer paying for them with an additional sales tax.

"First, we have to re-establish credibility with the citizens of Mesa," he said.

Finter's stance on the property tax has made some waves. Although the Mesa Chamber of Commerce endorsed him, it said they had reservations about his views.

"I'm not very happy with Mr. Finter not supporting the secondary property tax, but I like Alex and think he's a good man, so hopefully he'll come around," Whalen said.
