Sri Lankan Military Says Air Force Destroyed Suicide Training Base

Sri Lankan military officials say air force jets destroyed a training base for Tamil Tiger rebels Thursday in the north of the country.

A Sri Lankan Air Force spokesman said the base was a "suicide training facility" in rebel-held territory in the jungle.

Also Thursday, Sri Lankan officials said at least four people were killed and 13 others wounded when a suicide bomber riding a bicycle blew himself up in the north.

The military blamed Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack, which happened in the northern Jaffna peninsula.

Sri Lanka's government formally pulled out of a 2002 Norwegian-brokered cease-fire with the rebels earlier this month.

At least 70,000 people have been killed since the rebels began fighting for an independent homeland in 1983 - claiming discrimination by Sri Lanka's majority-Sinhalese population. The Tamil Tigers already control much of the island's north.

Q&A: Wilma Warshak Keeping port sites in sight

There's different reasons. The Port of Tacoma has done an incredible job of really creating much more momentum in the market. It's guiding a lot more end users who are coming into this port, which creates demand for warehouses and distribution centers. … it creates this whole synergy. So that's part of it. And part is that when the development cycle came back after the 2001 debacle, the market shifted again and the developers did what they did best, which is develop. Most of the available land sites were south.

How did you get interested in industrial real estate?

I actually started as an architect. I came out here to go to architectural school at the University of Washington. I always loved real estate and architecture was one component of that, but I wasn't fully in the trenches.

Basketball: China concerned over Yao Ming's injury, but still hopeful ...

The emotional response highlights the NBA star's role as the world's best known Chinese athlete and the most popular sports figure in China. China's Basketball Association called a news conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss Yao's condition, portraying the development almost as an issue of national security. "This is highly sensitive, so don't send any foreigners" to attend the news conference, the association's deputy director, Hu Jiashi, told The Associated Press, without explaining further. Spokesmen for the Chinese Olympic Committee said they had no immediate comment. .

Sumter County needs more foster homes

When the state snatches a child from a Sumter County home, chances are good that the kid is going for a long ride.

That's because, despite a population of nearly 70,000 people, Sumter County has only two foster homes for practical purposes. And those -- I'm sure you'll be shocked to learn this -- stay full.

(Sumter actually has six foster homes, but four are filled with kids that the foster parents intend to adopt, so they either can't or don't wish to take more children.)

THE FITNESS DIARIES: Love the workout, hate some of the moves

My co-worker Heather Shelton is also a regular at HealthSport's thrice weekly strength-training class. It's the build-muscle, increase-metabolism group. Almost always made up of women.

Our favorite exercise of late, however, is the post-session review of all the torture we've just undergone. Here's a sample:

Jessie: I hated her/him today, particularly that bicycle crunch. God almighty that was awful. I was dying.

Heather: Yeah, I was having a hard time with that stupid wood-chopping thing.

This will go on for a few minutes as we discuss the different types of "torture," sometimes resorting to reliving the agony by demonstrating the pile squat, the lateral jumpy things and the hamstring h-e-double hockey sticks.

Occasionally, after running through nearly all of the session, we then try to find something we like.

Owner is cited for tree removal

I'm all for protecting our heritage and keeping our city clean! But I remember a few years back when there was a bad snow and one of the trees the city planted along 8th street broke and went through a property owner's front window and he called the city about it. The city told him there was nothing they could do because they didn't want to pay for the window and told him it was his tree so he cut it down!!! There wasn't a shade tree commission then I don't think but since there is one now they should take care of the other problems I see in the city there are trees that hang in front of stop signs, there are trees that have rotten limbs, and trees that are about to bring down power lines!! what is being done about this??? If this happens to another property owner are they going to be told it's your tree and another tree is cut down, and who will pay for the damage??????
