| Gable Oaks violence | Austin: Security is owner’s obligation
Austin said he is trying to arrange a meeting Friday with representatives of Gable Oaks owner, Transom Development, to discuss security at the complex, which was the scene of a shooting at about 8 p.m. Sunday that left a 19-year-old man dead and a 22-year-old man critically injured. Meanwhile, two city officers are regularly patrolling the Colleton Street complex off North Main Street 24 hours a day to "establish some sense of calm and stability," he said. "Residents at this point are feeling uneasy," he said. Mary Myers, president of the Gable Oaks tenants' association, said Tuesday she supports Austin's position "100 percent." "I understand (the owners) don't want to spend money, but they're getting all this money," she said. Efforts Tuesday to reach representatives of The Beach Co.

SEXY SWEDE: Volvo's C30 creates luxury in a compact
The Swedes' hard work, ingenuity and long winter nights have led to a smorgasbord of accomplishments: the milking machine, the propeller, dynamite, Nicklas Lidstrom and lutefisk. All hail from Sweden -- though, honestly, lutefisk can stay there. Now, there is the Volvo C30 -- a luxurious sporty compact that can get you from Gothenburg to Stockholm faster than you can read "The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking." The C30 is a peek at the future of compacts -- small, powerful and speeding up to pretty darn expensive compared with typical small vehicles. But this is no pickled herring. .
NBA Celtics rally dooms Blazers
The low point came in Friday's 99-87 loss against the lowly Seattle Supersonics in which Portland shot just 37 percent from the field. "We're upset that we are losing, but we've been in this situation before at the beginning of the year when we were losing tons of games," Blazers guard Steve Blake said. "We just have to find a way to fight through it." In the first quarter Portland looked like it had broken out of its slump as the starting lineup of Blake, Jarrett Jack, Joel Przybilla, LaMarcus Aldridge and Roy seemed to gel. Right off the opening tip, Aldridge and Jack each drained jump shots. Roy scored twice, including on a 3-pointer to give Portland a quick 12-6 lead. Portland shot 3 of 6 from three-point range in the quarter. And the offense looked crisp, with Aldridge and Jack each scoring six points and Roy and Przybilla each scoring five.

AS I SEE IT: Riding a bike is lifetime thrill
I must be honest and state initially that I am an unabashed bicycle enthusiast and you will hear only one side of the story from me.

I currently own two bikes. Over the years since adolescence, some 50 plus years ago, I have probably owned around 20. So, I confess to a certain unassailable and nearly fanatical love affair with the bicycle.

H.G. Wells once said he would “never despair for the human race as long as he saw adults on bicycles.” Each time I ride, I feel better about myself for numerous reasons. I'm improving my own health for one.

For another, by not driving my trusty, rusty, dusty car, so I'm not polluting anybody's air. And so forth as you've heard from far smarter fellows than myself.

The way in which I move my overage, overweight body on a bike has not changed for more than a century since the bicycle was invented.

It is elegant, efficient and except for the spandex tights, almost beautiful.

The growing bicycling community proves it to be a serious mode of transportation, a serious vehicle for recreation, a serious vehicle for competition and a very serious object for debate about it's place in transportation planning.

Look at the Web sites devoted to bicycling in the Kansas and Missouri area straddling the state line.
Disabled advocates push Disney World, SeaWorld to allow Segways
When James Nappier, a petty officer in the Navy Reserve, first rode his new Segway scooter out into his Loxahatchee neighborhood, he felt emotions that were rare since he got home from Iraq. On the two-wheeled, electric scooter, he could get around easily. That felt like personal freedom. Standing on the upright vehicle, he could look neighbors in the eyes, not the belt buckles. That felt like equality. "It's been a godsend, because I can get out and get around on it," said Nappier, 49, who suffered leg- and arm-nerve damage in a May 2004 mortar attack in Ramadi, Iraq. .
Clinton, Obama Clash In Ohio Debate
In their final debate before critical primaries in Ohio and Texas, Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton clashed sharply on familiar ground, arguing Tuesday night over who has the better health-care plan, who has been right about Iraqand who would move most aggressively to rethink trade policy as president. In contrast to their debate five days ago in Texas, Clinton and Obama butted heads from the opening moments, starting with a clash over whether the senator from Illinois had mischaracterized her plan for universal health care in his campaign mailings, and continuing throughout the 90-minute session. "We should have a good debate that uses accurate information, not false, misleading and discredited information, especially on something as important as whether or not we will achieve quality, affordable health care for everyone," said Clinton (New York).
