Vols Ready For Leap

The gigantic boulder on which Tennessee students have been painting birthday messages and praise for Volunteer victories since the 1960s bore only that number painted in orange against a black backdrop on Sunday morning.

It's the ranking the No. 2 Volunteers likely will ascend to today on the heels of their 66-62 victory over top-ranked Memphis on Saturday night, their first victory over a No. 1 opponent since 1969.

Escape to Orlando

It was just beginning to rain when I got out of the car. Not rain, really, more of a sprinkle, the kind that's warm and touches you so gently that you don't think of it as getting wet.

This wasn't my first sighting of Lake Eola. There was something about the lake that had instantly charmed me, kept me coming back for drive-bys so that finally I just had to park the car and get out, walk on the grass, take a few pictures--a welcome escape from the thrill-a-minute overload of the theme parks this city is best known for.

Here, no movie theme songs blared, no cartoon characters awaited. I didn't have to worry when the next performance would start, because there weren't any. And I didn't have to stand in line; there weren't any of those either.

Discover Portsmouth's best kept secret

The four men were in smokers' exile on the front stoop at the bar, when the woman parked her car, got out and approached them, alone. She stopped at the foot of the stairs and looked up the four steps to the men. The men looked back. The woman spoke first. All four men began laughing. The woman walked up the stairs, spoke again and joined the laughter. The five then spoke for several minutes, laughing often, soaking up the weak winter sun. As the men stubbed out their cigarettes, the woman bade them farewell. She returned to her car. The men stayed outside to wave goodbye as she drove away. This took place at the Beach House, 506 Park Ave., in downtown Island Park. If you are there in January, you must be a local. Of course, that is almost as true in July, too. Island Park is one of this area's best kept secrets.

Crossett Council Focuses on Vandalism, Pathways

The mayor asks anyone who witnesses the destruction of city street signs to report it to the Crossett Police Department at 364-4132.

In new business, Caleb Walsh with UAM Career Pathways, gave a presentation to the council on the program. Walsh said the program assists low-income families further their education to secure higher wages. "The hope is to assist low-income parents in going back to school and furthering their education or technical training," Walsh said. Currently offering basic levels training, he said, the school eventually hopes to extend the program to include more employability training.

"The way we would like to tie that (the program) into the community is if we can find specific business and industry leaders that want to say, 'Hey, we need this skill level required for our entry level workers,'" he continued.

Witnesses describe Thurber as cruel bully

While other teens' pictures appeared throughout the high school yearbooks, Thurber's face showed up in only two places each year: his class photo and his football team photo.

Thurber, who had been hurt by cruelty, acted out with a cruelty of his own, Swartzell says.

Thurber called others hurtful names, Swartzell said.

"He would be mean first, most of the time.... He had a mean spirit to him."

Instead of turning the other cheek or winning people over, Thurber went out of his way to pick on others, Swartzell said.

One example: The two teens would be driving around, and it would irritate Thurber if a child crossed too slowly in front of them.

Thurber would bolt from the car, yank off his belt, chase down the smaller child and start whipping the kid, Swartzell said.

'Vantage Point' (president assassination drama, starring Dennis Quaid)

Each time "Vantage Point" loops back to high noon, we learn a little more about the shooting and the bombings from a different character's perspective. We also learn a little more about how tricky the thriller game has become in the late Bush era. A movie such as this, full of barely contained "24"-inspired rage (though its multiple perspectives owe more to the short-lived TV series "Boomtown") has it in for everybody. Its high body count and repeated shots of bombing victims wandering, bloody, amid smoke and carnage encourages a kind of sour acceptance of the way things are.

Once the conspiracy reveals itself, the film throws up its hands and plunks Quaid behind the wheel of a borrowed automobile, and director Pete Travis' film finally throws the stick shift out of reverse.
