The entrepreneur, president of Sid Wainer & Son, which ships produce to chefs all over the world, wanted to be able to meet the demands of his customers.

The scene inside the greenhouse is as verdant as late spring. And everything is miniature. Herbs like epazote, used in Mexican cooking, and aromatic lemon thyme will grow to about 2 inches high before being clipped, washed, and packaged. Pea greens will be harvested at 5 to 6 inches. By the next day, these darlings of trendy menus - they can cost $20 for an 8-ounce container - will be on restaurant tables. Chefs will create salads, garnish a fish course, even add a sprig or two to a dish of sorbet.

The winter harvest in this and in two other Wainer greenhouses is colorful. The tiniest African blue basil is growing, along with other doll-sized plants: chervil, popcorn shoots, carrot greens, shungiku, peppercress, golden beets, arugula, and red shisho.

minazione e resistenza irakena

The U.S.-led coalition killed 14 road construction workers in airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan because of mistaken intelligence reports, Afghan officials said Wednesday.

The engineers and laborers had been contracted by the U.S. military to build a road in mountainous Nuristan, and were sleeping in two tents in Nurgaram when they were killed Monday night, said Sayed Noorullah Jalili, director of the Kabul-based road construction company Amerifa. There were no survivors, he said.

"All of our poor workers have been killed," Jalili said.

"I don't think the Americans were targeting our people. I'm sure it's the enemy of the Afghans who gave the Americans this wrong information."

Nuristan Governor Tamim Nuristani said the coalition conducted air strikes after receiving reports that "the enemy" was in the area, and hit the road construction workers as they were sleeping.

Facebook Cops Allegedly Brag of Hitting Pedestrians

Police are under fire for bragging and joking about crashing their vehicles and hitting pedestrians while on the job in a strange Facebook group.

The British officers even posted photos of their damaged police vehicles onto the "Yes I have had a POLCOL" group in what appeared to be a game of one-upmanship.

"POLCOL" is a term used by officers to describe a police collision.

"If you have had a POLCOL tell the world about it," the group's administrator said on the page.

"If you have a picture of one share it."

One group member claimed to have even "knocked" a deaf person off a bicycle while listing his top five POLCOLs.

"1. I reversed a van down a darkened alley way and knocked a blokes fence down," he said.
