Peter Cochrane's Blog: Tech history repeats itself

Written in the bar of a hotel in Buckhead, Atlanta, Georgia and despatched via a free wi-fi service in the lobby.

This morning I was talking to an industry leader in the USA about recruiting young people and he grumbled that they didn't even know what 'cc' (carbon copy) and 'bcc' (blind carbon copy) meant.

He then went on to complain these young candidates used texting and Facebook to communicate instead of email.

Could Obama Turn Red States Blue?

The demographics in those states have shifted toward Democrats of late, and the party made gains in each in 2006.

A far more debatable premise is whether Obama is uniquely suited to put red states in play.

The South would appear to be the stronger part of his argument, as many of the states in the region have significant black populations that have supported him beyond all historical comparisons in the contests to date.

But, there is far more to the story in the South, according to Tom Schaller, an associate professor at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County and the author of "Whistling Past Dixie: How Democrats Can Win Without the South."

Schaller argued that while it is "tempting to think that Southern states will be competitive, thanks to a very motivated African American base .

Orangewood's Gendreau is Central Florida boys soccer player of year

Last weekend during a club soccer game, Alan Gendreau approached the man whose career numbers he's chasing.

"He asked me if I was nervous between my junior and senior years," said Mark Keymont, Bishop Moore's boys soccer coach, whose 144 career high-school goals between 1980 and 1982 is second only to Pine Ridge's Jason Mroczkowski's 154 goals between 1995 and 1998. "I told him not to be nervous. Just play the game, and things will fall into place."

With 136 career goals, Gendreau, a junior at Orangewood Christian, is closing in on both marks.

"Living up to expectations, it's a nerve-racking thing," Gendreau said. "Coming into a season and knowing that you could break the record, it's just kind of nerve-racking."

If Gendreau continues at the pace he was on this season, he has nothing to worry about.

Cars out as London mayor clears way for Paris-style plage and cycle ...

Visitors to London may not find the streets paved with gold but they could certainly find that a lot more streets have been paved, under proposals for the tourist heart of the capital.

Cars will be banned from some of London’s busiest streets as part of a bold plan to create continental-style boulevards devoted to pedestrians and cyclists.

Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, plans to replicate Paris Plage, the beach created on a highway alongside the Seine each August, on the four-lane Victoria Embankment beside the Thames.

He is also considering a ban on through traffic on a series of roads connecting London’s parks and main shopping areas, including Portland Place, which runs between Regent’s Park and Oxford Street.

Speaking at Mayor’s Question Time at the London Assembly yesterday, Mr Livingstone said that he wanted to create attractive, tree-lined walkways in the style of Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

The bicycle recylcer

A kid without a bicycle is almost like a kid without air, says local cycling enthusiast John French.

To ensure children aren't deprived of basic necessities of recreation, French has launched Recycle Bicycle, where used bikes are fixed up and distributed to under privileged youth.

He launched the program Dec. 1, with an eye toward helping less fortunate community members.

"Just within the last few years there has been increased awareness in Squamish about homelessness and poverty in general," he said. "I'm really inspired by all of that work that is being done."

The idea caught fire after speaking with a few family members and friends, French said, who described how he suddenly found himself with four bikes.

A month later, he had nine bikes with a commitment of five more.
